Customs warehouses: long-term & temporary goods storage solutions

Gevara Muitinės Sandėlis

Customs warehouses are specially designated areas, supervised by customs authorities, where goods can be stored until all necessary customs procedures are completed.

These warehouses are most commonly used under a temporary storage regime (TSD – “without declaration”), where goods have not yet been fully cleared by customs. In Lithuania, this activity is regulated by national and EU customs legislation, which stipulates that temporary storage can be applied until the completion of import, export, transit, or other customs formalities.

At UAB Gevara, our experienced and qualified team of customs brokers provides comprehensive support throughout the customs clearance process and ensures proper accounting for goods in temporary storage. Typically, the temporary storage period lasts up to 90 days, during which businesses can complete required procedures, organize documentation, or plan subsequent logistics operations.

However, as the need for more flexible goods management grows, longer storage periods are increasingly required. Long-term storage under the customs warehouse regime allows goods to be stored for the maximum period permitted by law – typically up to three years (1,095 days) from the date of entry into the warehouse. This ensures that clients can flexibly plan deliveries, wait for favorable market conditions, or secure the final buyer, while duties, excise, and VAT are only paid when goods are released for free circulation, as required by law.

Moreover, UAB Gevara goes beyond traditional customs brokerage. We provide a full range of services, from declaration preparation, export and import documentation, transit procedures, and T1 declaration processing to CMR consignment note management. We can also integrate these services with logistics solutions and warehouse operations, ensuring smooth and centralized goods management. This means clients do not need to seek separate partners – all customs and logistics services are provided under one roof.

Key Advantages of Long-Term Storage:

  • Flexible storage periods – the ability to store goods for more than three months, up to the maximum legal limit (typically three years), until they are sold or exported.
  • Efficient document management – additional time to properly complete declarations, obtain required permits or certificates, without rush or risk of errors.
  • Top-level security – goods are stored in certified customs zones with continuous supervision, protection, and full compliance with legal requirements.
  • Integration with logistics networks – strategically located warehouses near transport routes and distribution centers reduce supply chain complexity.

Customs warehouses with long-term storage capabilities offer businesses a highly valuable solution for maximizing operational flexibility and efficiency.

The specialists at UAB Gevara, with years of experience in customs brokerage and logistics, ensure a seamless process – from import or export declarations to storage and distribution. This enables clients to achieve optimal goods flow management, minimize rushed errors, and reduce risks associated with customs procedure discrepancies.
